1. NRC — Noise Reduction Coefficient
NRC measures how much airborne sound a material absorbs rather than reflects, on a scale from 0.00 for a highly reflective surface to 1.00 for a highly absorptive surface. It is measured under ASTM C423 in a reverberation room.

2. IIC — Impact Insulation Class
IIC rates how well a floor and ceiling assembly blocks impact noise such as footsteps, dropped objects, and furniture movement from reaching the space below. It is measured under ASTM E492 and rated under ASTM E989. The critical procurement point is that IIC describes the complete assembly — slab, underlayment, and finish floor — rather than the carpet alone.
3. ΔIIC — The Improvement Added by the Floor Covering
ΔIIC, measured under ASTM E2179, isolates the improvement a floor covering adds to a standard bare concrete slab. This is a fairer way to compare products from different suppliers because it removes much of the building-structure variation from the comparison.
Hard finishes generally add modest impact improvement on their own, while carpet — especially carpet with cushion — can add substantially more. Corridors and upper-floor guestrooms are therefore two zones where carpet delivers a particularly audible benefit.
Zone by Zone: Where Carpet Earns Its Keep Acoustically
Corridors — The Highest-Impact Decision
Corridors concentrate footsteps, luggage wheels, housekeeping carts, deliveries, and late-night conversations within a short distance of guestroom doors. Carpet works on both noise paths: it absorbs airborne sound and cushions impacts before vibration enters the slab and walls.
Dense low-pile broadloom or high-mass carpet tile with cushioned backing is commonly specified here. Broadloom supports continuous pattern flow and fewer seams; carpet tiles support faster replacement near elevators and other high-wear zones. Design intent and maintenance strategy determine the best format.
Guestrooms — Protecting the Guest Below
In guestrooms, the priority shifts toward impact isolation. Carpet with attached cushion backing, or broadloom over a separate underlay, is one of the most cost-effective impact-noise treatments for concrete-slab construction.
A practical hybrid is hard flooring at the entrance vestibule and bathroom threshold, with carpet through the sleeping area. This preserves easy cleaning in spill zones while maintaining footfall isolation where quiet matters most.
Meeting Rooms, Ballrooms, and Prefunction Areas
These spaces depend on speech intelligibility. Excess reverberation makes presentations harder to understand and banquet conversation tiring. High-pile-weight broadloom over cushion contributes absorption while also carrying the design identity of signature hospitality spaces.

Stairs and Transition Zones
Stairwells near guestrooms can transmit sharp impact noise. Carpeted treads with the appropriate nosing and fire performance help close this gap while also improving slip resistance.
The Acoustic Specification Checklist
When the objective is measurable noise reduction rather than simply having carpet, include the following items in the specification.
- Pile construction and density. For corridors, specify dense low cut-pile or tight loop construction, pile height, pile weight, and traffic classification. Density supports durability, while pile mass and cushion contribute more directly to acoustics.
- Backing and cushion. This is often the largest acoustic variable. Compare hard backing, PE or cushion-back tile, attached-cushion broadloom, and broadloom over separate underlay on the exact same basis.
- Fire performance. Request the actual certificate for the quoted construction under the applicable ASTM E648, EN 13501-1, or local requirement rather than relying on a generic brochure claim.
- Documented acoustic data. Request NRC under ASTM C423 and ΔIIC under ASTM E2179 for the exact pile, backing, and cushion configuration being priced.
- Appearance retention and cleanability. Match fiber, stain protection, sunlight exposure performance, and construction to the traffic zone so acoustic performance is not lost through premature replacement.
- Dimensional stability for wheeled traffic. Housekeeping and luggage carts stress seams and edges. Specify tuft bind and delamination strength for broadloom or backing performance suitable for cart traffic for tiles.

What This Means for Total Cost of Ownership
Acoustic carpet is sometimes challenged on initial price against hard flooring. A complete comparison includes costs that rarely appear on the finish-floor quotation.
- Acoustic remediation avoided. Achieving comparable impact isolation under hard flooring generally requires resilient underlayment systems, adding material and labor while contributing little airborne absorption inside the corridor.
- Review-score economics. Noise is a frequent trigger for negative reviews and compensation requests. Flooring addresses it passively and continuously without requiring staff intervention.
- Sectional replacement. Carpet tiles allow worn zones to be replaced without closing an entire corridor, while broadloom in guestrooms can be renewed room by room during planned renovation cycles.
Properties that remove corridor carpet solely for maintenance reasons can end up paying twice: once for the hard finish and again for acoustic remediation after opening.
